Lately I’ve been exploring a new series of works

Lately I’ve been exploring a new series of works around stillness and presence. I’ve always been drawn to the Symbolist painters — Klimt, Odilon Redon, even Paul Klee — and how they used shape and form to suggest something more than the surface.

This work in progress plays with composition in that same spirit: abstract forms holding a kind of quiet energy, a figure emerging, light filtering through layers of paint. I’m interested in how colour and shape together can create that sense of presence, without needing to define it.

From a small thumbnail in the sketchbook, an idea of shape and form begins to evolve. I like seeing how it grows on the canvas — shifting with each layer.

In this piece, I thought I might add fragments of collage but kept it simple instead, just laying down the early ground. That stage always carries something into the painting, even as it changes and develops.

There’s something wonderful about beginning a new canvas. Laying down the first marks with charcoal feels free, expressive, messy, alive. It’s also a way of finding structure and composition, even if most of it ends up covered.

The water-soluble charcoals — especially the ochre tones — bring such richness to the surface. These first layers always carry an energy that stays in the painting, however much it shifts.
